When you can issue a receipt
- The amount paid is at least 1 yen.
- The order status is (payment confirmed). It changes after the shop ships and Rakuten confirms the payment. If it hasn’t changed yet, wait or contact the shop.
- Orders that don’t ship anything, such as kobo or Rakuten Books downloads, only need the status (processed).
- The order is within 2 years of the order date. Rakuten says some orders placed before October 2023 can’t be issued, depending on the payment method.
- If the shop has left Rakuten Ichiba, the purchase history can’t issue the document and Rakuten can’t give you the shop’s contact details. Use the contact details in your order confirmation email.
- If your email address doesn’t meet Rakuten’s format rules, issuing may fail. Contact the Rakuten Ichiba customer support center in that case.
Receipt or invoice: it depends on how you paid
Paying the whole amount with points doesn’t change this: you get the document that matches the payment method you selected. Rakuten Pay balance (楽天キャッシュ) used on an order is shown on the receipt as points used ().
| Payment method | What you get |
|---|---|
| Credit card, bank transfer, 7-Eleven prepayment, Lawson or post office ATM prepayment, deferred payment (後払い決済), Apple Pay, PayPal | Invoice-system receipt (インボイス制度対応領収書) |
| Cash on delivery, shopping credit or loan, auto loan, lease, invoice payment (請求書払い), Alipay | Invoice-system invoice (インボイス制度対応請求書) |
| Furusato nozei (hometown tax) donations | Not issued from purchase history; see Rakuten Furusato Nozei’s FAQ |
Purchase-history receipts and shop-issued receipts
Rakuten says each shop is the issuer of the receipts and invoices you download from purchase history, in line with the invoice rules. So the PDF is the shop’s document, not Rakuten’s.
How shops handle their own paper or emailed receipts varies, and Rakuten’s help doesn’t set one rule for it. If you need a different format, a correction or a paper copy, ask the shop through in your purchase history or at the bottom of the product page.
Using it as a qualified invoice
If the shop is a registered qualified invoice issuer (適格請求書発行事業者), the receipts and invoices from purchase history follow Japan’s invoice system. Shops show their status on their company information page (会社概要). Registration is optional, so not every shop has a number.
Rakuten says that if a shop registers after your purchase, it still can’t issue you a receipt with the registration number. Items at the reduced 8% rate are marked with the 8% rate in the item details. You can check a T number on the National Tax Agency’s registry site.
After a change or cancellation
If the order is changed or cancelled, you can download the document from Rakuten’s automatic email, such as . When the latest receipt or invoice date changes, the issue date changes with it.
Keeping the files for Japanese tax
How you store PDFs downloaded from purchase history can fall under Japan’s rules for keeping records electronically (電子帳簿保存法). Which documents you need and how to store them depends on your situation, so ask a tax accountant (zeirishi).
Paidwhere
File your Rakuten receipts by month
Rakuten receipts come as PDFs. The free Invoice to CSV converter turns text PDFs into a spreadsheet in your browser, and the file never leaves your computer.
Paidwhere, a Mac and Windows app, picks up each PDF you save to a folder you choose, renames it by date, vendor and amount, files it into year and month folders on your own computer, and keeps an Excel or CSV ledger. Import your card statement and it matches each charge to a saved receipt, so you can see which orders still need one.
