Billing dates and why your card shows extra lines
- For card and PayPal payments, the billing date is usually the day you started the paid plan, not the day you created the account.
- Metered products such as Actions, Codespaces and Packages run on a billing cycle from the first to the last day of the month.
- GitHub may place an authorization hold on your card when you start a subscription or trial, update a payment method, or build up significant metered usage. GitHub releases it right away, but your bank can take a few days.
- Each account (personal, organization, enterprise) has its own billing date, payment method and receipt, so one card can be charged on several days in a month.
Company address and tax details on receipts
Your billing address is in Billing & Licensing under . GitHub’s tax-certificate instructions ask you to make sure the address, and fields are correct there.
GitHub’s current billing docs don’t describe a separate field for adding extra text, such as a VAT number, to receipts; the older help article on that topic now redirects to the payment information page. If you need extra details on a receipt, contact GitHub Support.
In the United States, organization owners, enterprise owners and billing managers on the GitHub Customer Agreement can upload a sales tax exemption certificate (JPG, PNG or PDF) in the section of .
Paidwhere
File GitHub receipts with your other software bills
Downloaded GitHub receipts and invoices can go into the free Invoice to CSV converter, which reads digital PDFs in your browser and never uploads them.
Paidwhere, a desktop app, files each receipt that lands in your Downloads folder (paid plans) into a year and month folder named date_vendor_amount, adds it to a ledger and matches it to the line on your card statement, which helps when holds and several billing dates make GitHub charges hard to read.
Questions
- I’m a member of the organization. How do I get a receipt?
- Ask an organization owner or billing manager. Only those roles can open the organization’s billing pages. An owner can also add you as a billing manager or add your email under so payment notifications reach you.
- Why do I see a GitHub charge that isn’t in Payment history?
- It may be an authorization hold, which GitHub places when you start a subscription or trial, update a payment method or build up metered usage. Holds are temporary; GitHub suggests contacting your bank if one lasts longer than 10 business days.
- Are Marketplace app charges on a separate receipt?
- Usually not. Paid Marketplace apps share the account’s payment method and billing date, and your receipt lists the GitHub plan and app subscriptions together.
- Can I get usage data as a spreadsheet?
- Owners and billing managers can download CSV usage reports from the billing pages, and the REST API offers usage reports for users, organizations and enterprises. These are usage reports, not receipts.
